I bought one of the My Book Essentials for my wife's business as she needed a reliable and non-tech way to back up her business files. I hadn't done any research into this particular drive at the time so I guess we got lucky! This is a simply fantastic USB drive for a number of reasons. Here's what we've found with it.
First of all it's very easy to set up. You just take it out of the drive and plug it in. It appears as a drive you can use normally. The other thing that's really good about this drive is how quiet it is. There's no difference between it being off or on noise wise!
Although I often say it's not important how a USB drive looks, it's worth noting the design here. These drives look very impressive on your desk! They're tiny too - the size of a paperback novel. And you can put more than one next to each other as you need more storage. This is a seriously good little external USB drive with a lot of storage for under £60.

The first thing you need to know about the Seagate FreeAgent USB Drives is that they come with a reassuring 5 year warranty. Not that you're likely to have any problems with this drive though as Seagate are known for their quality and for making drives that last a LONG time.
This FreeAgent drive has a HUGE 500GB of storage that will hold all your movies, photos, files and system backups... or whatever else you want to throw at it. There's nothing geeky about the setup here. It's been designed for even very new users and we had no problems with it.
Transfer speeds are as fast as you can get at the moment with USB and you get all the software included to transfer, backup and make sure your data is secure. This drive has been getting very positive 5***** feedback on Amazon and we think it's one of the better 500GB models around at the moment.

One of the main concerns we have with any USB drive is the NOISE. There's nothing worse than that awful whining noise you get from some models. Thankfully the Drivestation 500gb has SILENT operation, partly thanks to it not needing a fan.
The next best thing I'd like to tell you about - and this is really cool - is that when not in use, the drive totally shuts down, so saving you money. A lot of drives will burn unnecessary power but the Drivestation won't.
This drive is very friendly to new users and comes pre-formatted and ready to go out of the box. You get a host of good backup software and the drive uses 'TurboUSB' - something that makes file transfer 20% faster than other drives.
This drive has great reviews and we definitely recommend it.
