Western Digital My Book Essential
I bought one of the My Book Essentials for my wife's business as she needed a reliable and non-tech way to back up her business files. I hadn't done any research into this particular drive at the time so I guess we got lucky! This is a simply fantastic USB drive for a number of reasons. Here's what we've found with it.
First of all it's very easy to set up. You just take it out of the drive and plug it in. It appears as a drive you can use normally. The other thing that's really good about this drive is how quiet it is. There's no difference between it being off or on noise wise!
Although I often say it's not important how a USB drive looks, it's worth noting the design here. These drives look very impressive on your desk! They're tiny too - the size of a paperback novel. And you can put more than one next to each other as you need more storage. This is a seriously good little external USB drive with a lot of storage for under £60.

Western Digital TV HD 1080P Media Player

SanDisk Extreme III SDHC
Don't be tempted to skimp on your SDHC card for the sake of a few quid. Reading the reviews at Amazon for this card and others, you'll soon learn that although this card costs a few pounds more, it gives a MASSIVE difference in performance when taking pics, uploading to your computer and so on.
The Sandisk Extreme 3 is currently one of the fastests cards of it's kinds and on test it speeds up taking pictures and getting them transfered to your PC. It's got a 30mb per second transfer rate and has been tested against shock, heat and cold.

Toshiba 1TB
We couldn't believe how quiet this external USB drive from Toshiba is. Like a lot of newer drives, it doesn't use a fan, relying instead on the aluminium casing to do the cooling.
What else did we like about this drive? Well the 1TB storage is going to be enough for anyone out there to do their backups and store movies, photos and all your other stuff. It writes quickly and setup is a matter of plugging it in.

Maxtor 1TB Basics
The best kinds of products are the ones that you buy and sort of forget about because they do their job without any fuss. The Maxtor 1TB Basics is a solid little workhorse of an external drive that's got a lot of storage and a good price.

This humble looking little box is the TrekStor DataStation. A compact external USB Harddrive with a whopping 1TB of storage. It's compatible with Mac, PC and Linux. But what's lurking under that cool black exterior?
I'd definitely look for a fanless external hard drive as the noise some of these drives put out is very annoying. The TrekStore uses it's casing to cool the drive so there's no fan here. It also runs on a low power consumption and will shut down when your computer does.
The drive looks and feels very solid and doesn't look cheap in the least. It comes bundled with Nero Essentials Backup software but you don't have to use this if you have another tool. this drive is easy to use and there's nothing to set up. Take it out of the box, plug it in and you're ready to go. This is a high quality drive offering great value for money.

It's hard to imagine anyone running out of space with this high capacity USB external drive from Seagate. You get an obscenely large 1.5TB of storage here that's ideal for backups, media and all your other files.
There's nothing remotely difficult to use with this drive and it comes preformatted and ready to use out of the box. The FreeAgent Xtreme comes bundled with lots of helpful backup and data protection software to get you going and it's very easy to use.
Another thing that I found with this drive was that it's very quiet. I had a HORRIBLE noisy USB drive in the past but with this external usb hard drive you can hardly hear it. Gorgeous! It also powers down and is designed to save energy.

Freecom Mobile Drive 250GB
If you're looking for a way to expand your laptop's storage and don't want to spend a fortune, then you've absolutely got to check out this 250gb hard drive from Freecom. The pic makes it look small, but when you see this external hard drive, it looks really small and gadgety! I love the design of this product.
In fact, this drive won the iF design award 2007. But that wouldn't count for much if the drive was rubbish. And I'm pleased to report that this drive has a very fast write speed.
